Broke another rail. Looks like I need a min. 48 hour soak. This is going to take some time doing 2 rails at a time.

Glad to hear that the process is working, ratfarts on the cracked rail. I had a couple of those...but mostly they broke at a knot. My quality control team let me down!! Next time no knots for me!!!! Easier said than done though...

Easier said than done though... The knots are a pain. Finding a knot free board would be tough. I think I've broke 4 so far so I'm going to have to buy at least one more board. I suppose I should get two just to be safe.

Hmmmm it's about time to make a decision on filling with foam or adding a vent. I'm on the fence! Expanding foam trimmed down before gluing top deck seems a bit messy. I could see myself installing a vent and forgetting to open or close the vent. It would be sad to see this thing blow up like a balloon. Then there's the Gore-Tex vents, which sound maintenance free. A few more weeks and I'll get it figured out.

My wood is just too knotty for me! Knotty, knotty. I lost count of how many rails I've broke. I am now soaking for 7 days. I finally got 2 more last night. It is definitely breaking at the knots and only the knots. Off to buy more wood after work. I think knots in the middle are fine. I just need to avoid wood with knots At the ends where the tension is greatest. I think I have already spent $50 on just rail boards hopefully another 2 boards will be enough. I haven't figured a way to salvage this stuff either. Anyone, anyone?

Ouch!
Well I cut up my broken rail pieces (triangular section) into 1 1/2" pieces and used them to help attach the ribs to the deck...
I know how tough it is to get clear grained cedar (at least around here) but I did have some luck with an old lumberyard, not one of the boxes.
The other option (although expensive) might be online wood purchase, but then there is shipping.
Good luck and keep the faith!

Crap!!! I was setting at work when I realized I flipped one of my rails the wrong way last night while gluing. I new something didn't look right when I looked at it this morning. Seriously, that bites. I may have come up with a fix. I don't know if it's possible to pull a rail after the gorilla glue has set, I'm guessing not. I'll have to add like 2 extra rails other wise. Check out the picture I cut up a photo copy of the plans to illustrate my mistake. Lol, and frustrating....I picked a bad year to give up smoking and drinking. Attachments:

Everybody calm down.....I think I've got it! Using my handy dandy paper cutouts I found the needed shape to fix my errors. I would like to say it was my first an will be my last but I couldn't fool anyone.

Yeaaaa! Congrats on figuring a way out! I had a similar situation caused by me not cuting the triangle pieces large enough!!! I also wonder if you could do what wood boat builders do and that is to cut the wood down to remove the knots and then using a scarf joint (8:1 or 12:1) to create a knotless strip??? Judging from my first board, I may need to try this myself! Enjoy!
