Hi guys,
A first timer with moderate woodworking experience! Very worried after seeing some of the beautiful finished projects, I’ve told my wife ours will look like yours so the bar is set very high!!
I have the plans for an 11ft SUP. I’ve been scouring the land for wood or even a decent wood merchant and basically in Gibraltar or nearby southern Spain there is clearly a lack of wood options, or they will charge me $200, yes $, just for cutting some planks and then more for the wood itself…not an option, so my questions are…
My wood options are Plywood sheets (for spine and ribs) which probably won’t be waterproof and basic Pine strips for deck, bottom and rails. Is this ok? I have thought of giving the spine and ribs a coat of West system epoxy resin to ensure waterproofing.
1. With the difficulty and high cost of getting strips for the deck and bottom, is it possible to use a single large sheet of 4 or 5mm plywood (same as the ribs). Will this be strong enough? Can I even use plywood here (I don’t see anyone else use this but not sure if its simply for looks or weakness?). As it is I would need to have a join as the sheets are a maximum 7.8ft long (any thoughts on this join also welcome!). If this is too weak I have considered adding some extra support under the main standing area (I weigh 240lbs with a view to reducing this once the board is finished!).
2. If I have to use Pine, is there an optimum width or depth of the planking as I may have to find some that is already cut into a strip but may be thicker or thinner and certainly it will be shorter, 7ft max.
3. Regarding the Rails. Cutting the rails in triangular strips as per instructions may be quite costly (I don’t have the tools to do it myself) so the other options are to build up the laminated strips idea, but I will need to modify the end cut of the ribs I presume (hopefully I can find some images of this to follow). Any other ideas for rails would also be welcome!
Thanks for your time guys.
I know that one of the key elements mentioned in the guide is to have the right tools but I simply cannot currently afford to buy a wood planer and a table saw to make my own cuts of wood and the idea is to make a beautiful board for less than the cost of buying one!
Thanks again for any input.
