Howdy all, I'm new to stand up paddleboarding, having never done it before - ever! I am itching to get in the water though and do this! That being said, I am looking for advice on a first board. I've been in the water plenty with other sports: canoes, kayaks, surfing, but not paddle boarding specifically. Mainly I am going to be on a large lake about a mile from my house..convenient !I am a pretty experienced woodworker so Chad's board jumped out at me. I'm wondering now though if this is the best idea for a first board? Or would something like this cheapee foam board from Keeper Sports work better for a beginner? www.amazon.com/Keeper-Sports-Paddle-10-Feet-5-5-Inch/dp/B007722X40/ref=pd_rhf_se_p_t_1 I'm 6'1" and 175lbs and will be using my SUP on a pretty calm lake, if any of that makes a difference. Thanks to Chad for lots of help answering my many emailed questions (and probably more to come)! Great plans and book! Cheers, Robert

Greetings! Also not a SUPer, but I would put the kibash on the foam board and go for the woody! vibe is a million times better! ...not to mention the fun building it!

I just finished a SUP. My friend rented a bunch of different ones, said mine glided as good if not better than and was as stable as the rented ones. The only big negative is mine, being made of wood, is much heavier. But well worth the effort of making, especially being a fellow woodworker.
