Hi everyone. I'm building Chad's SUP and I have a question about the weight of the board. It's made of bass and cedar. I'm at the point where I have finished rough shaping the rails (50/50) with the belt sander and I'm a bit concerned about how heavy my board is right now...42 lbs. With glass and varnish I expect that it will be about 50 lbs., which seems really heavy to me. I'm wondering how heavy the SUP's are that others have built? Any suggestions to lighten it are welcome.

Does any body have any input on this? I know that Surfech boards are built very light and their 11'SUPS weight almost 30lbs. The lightest wooden SUP that I have built was 40lbs after glass.

Different method of construction but my 14' plywood SUP weighs 35 pounds. I could easily have gotten it down to 30 by using lighter glass for the non-critical areas and by eliminating the heavy (but very handy) deck plate/storage compartment and not painting the underside. This board was made from 3mm plywood for the skin and 6mm plywood for the internal ribs/stringers using stitch and glue construction.

I weighed mine this weekend with a heavy glass FCS fin it came in at 31 lbs. I am tickled ! Balsa Rails and Paulownia bottom helped. The glass on the deck is double layers of 3.2oz and 1 layer on the underside of the deck.
