That looks real nice, and that is a great example of creative clamping. Th nos block is about the same, but it takes longer to line all the pieces up JUST RIGHT!! Here is a cool little nose block that I put together with some flotsam that was donated by the local park ranger. He always finds nice pieces of wood after the storms come through. Attachments:

wow, that is nice. I have yet to do the nose and I am a little nervous I wanted to keep it simple and im afraid that I wont get the straight edge that is needed to line up both sides. I will try this weekend. I have to my resin will be delivered and I want to begin glassing so it must be done.
thanks for the photos

The fin should be here next week. I post detail when it arrives. I bought it from foam ez and somewhat went off their suggestions. These guys are very good to work with. I also ordered my glass and resin supplies from them.

I have a question for everyone. Has anyone done a nose block by just chopping off the nose and putting a single piece up front? I see most do two or three pieces. Attachments:

I was thinking this would be a lot easier but will it be solid enough or even look good? Attachments:

With only one piece of wood it'll be quite flat. If your ok with that it'll work. Multiple pieces allow you to follow a curve without making the nose block too thick and heavy.

one other question, did you foam fill your board? was it spray foam or sliced and shaved foam? where did you get it from and when in the process did you do it?

Eric is right, but even if you are lining up smaller pieces, you can handle the rocker, but will still have to work to get the nose to match the boards cross section, or vice versa, depending on which way you line up the small pieces. I used a belt sander for the majority of that sanding (should have used a finer paper though...had to work to get rid of those 80 scratches. and I didn't get all of them either!).
No foam here, but would like to get away from that vent. I know that I'll lose the plug!

As far as filling with foam, I have tried 2 methods. One method is to get the Great Stuff foam from home depot and fill the chambers up before you attach the top deck. once the foam expands and cures fully you can use a hand saw across the ribs to cut the excess away , then attach the deck. the other option is to get a sheet of foam from HomeDepot, stack and glue the layers in place but non of which extending above the ribs or rail, then fill the voids and top layer with spray foam and shave as described above. As a note. if you fill with foam you don't need to vent the board, BUT it adds quite a bit of weight....

I didn't use any foam. I did however go with the multiple pieces on the nose. It went actually, fairly easy. My package of glass and resin should arrive tomorrow. I'll be glassing it this weekend. I'm keeping my fingers crossed Attachments:

Getting ready for the glassing. By the way you can't see it but the Mississippi river is behind me and those trees. Attachments:

Board looks great!!! That nose is very nice!
I hope to be glassing in a couple of weeks so I'm looking forward to seeing how it goes with you.
Are you using epoxy? Even though it is more expensive I think that I will be using it.
How much of a hike is it to the big muddy?
