Hey guys I was wanting to post on here a few weeks ago, but I have been having to much fun with making my boards. My wife and I are on a two year working holiday in Canada and come from the east coast of Australia. The ski season was fun but now I am missing the water big time. I just landed a job as a shop teacher in the hills of BC so I thought why not build a sup to paddle around on as we make our way around Canada and the USA. I started Easter long weekend and now I am just about to glue the noise blocks on. Here are some pic's and videos of the build and steam box I have used for the rails.

A steam box I made for $0.00 from a few items found at the local dump.

more pics to come soon sorry battery is low and I left the charger at work.

the rails for me were the biggest time killer and I don't know how the hell you guys do it without a steam box. I found I had to soak for about 4 days and then steam for 1 hour min

clamps were another thing, I had about 15 squeeze clamps (not enough, and not strong enough also) so I made a heap of wooden ones using screws. (I am a tight ass)

so after doing a heap of scarf joints I am pretty stoked with the deck, I also wanted show my rocker jig. easy done using ply. once you have the spine cut trace it, mark each rib and then offset with the line by 35mm. (screw two pieces together so you only have to cut once) then nail it into a box Attachments:

Board is looking great! I'm in the midst of my first build with little carpentry knowledge but loving the process. Looking forward to seeing your board once it is finished! Where are you living out in BC? I'm in Ontario, a teacher and considering an exchange to OZ in the future.

We are in Nakusp and New Denver, this has been a great project, I have a bit of woodwork experience being a shop teacher but still learning heaps and making a few mistakes along the way lol. The students at my school are loving getting involved where they can.
Exchange? well after teaching here and then in Aus you wont want to come back! I can't get over how bad teachers in BC are treated. good luck bud.

Looking good. Won't be long before the weather is warm enough over there for the glassing which must be soon by the looks of it! After building mine (see Inspiration) I've decided to try a Kaholo which I'm around a third of the way through. I've made a few alterations though and built a small foredeck, I've also used cedar to strip the whole top but the hull is S & C as per the original plans. It will be interesting to compare the two in the summer.
Anyway, good luck with the rest of the build. If you are interested there is lots of info on glassing, preparation, correct temperatures, etc on various forums, on YouTube and other sites especially under the title of strip wood kayaks. If I remember correctly there are some links on my blog. It's a part of the job that's very important and probably the most expensive too what with the cost of epoxy and glass, etc. It's the finish that everyone gets to see if you get my drift!
Oh yes, not too jealous about the price of cedar! costs an arm and a leg over this side of the pond.
Take care.
