I've been thinking of building an 11' SUP and I've been looking at several of the boards on this site for inspiration. Looking at wood at the big box stores, the cedar doesn't have much shading difference from the pine. What woods are you using to get the contrasting shades?

The cedar I picked up at Home Depot has some decent shading, especially after I wet it down. I plan on doing 2 pinstripes out of redwood to help break it up too.

I agree with Mike. Home Depot, Lowes , Menards. All had good contrasting cedar. In the Midwest that is! No where to ride my board but good wood all around.

I go to HD & Lowe's about twice a month when business is slow and go thru their stash of 2x4, 6 and 8's It runs from white to dark drown..... Found about 6 straight knot free 16's last time ..... 2 are beautiful rose, with a nice cocoa brown stripe.... most have come of the same tree..... as long you restack the wood, you are usually good .... HD is all about you picking out straight lumber... 1x's are good for the bead and cove stuff and the short pieces that come off a piece with knots, are good for tail and nose blocks..... I have even used cedar shingles for tail and nose..... and fins..... I have used left over cedar closet planks for fins .... awesome colors !!
