I am in the process of my first build. I just retired and now have the time to do some woodworking. I would call myself a beginner so my questions are a bit basic.
1) I am about to add a fin box. I have seen in the directions to cut out the cross sections to add the support blocks on either side of the spar but i am wondering why i just can't add blocks between the cross sections. It seems like it would be easier.
2) I decided to go with an inner nose block, but i decided to do so after i already had the bottom deck glued up and did not have enough of the deck to extend beyond the nose. I decided, why not go with an outer nose block on the bottom and inner on the top. As you won't be looking at the top and bottom at the same time i figure no issue? I will post a photo if i can figure out how. I think the size of my photos are > 1mb. Photo hopefully coming in the next post.
3) I have shaped the rails to attach the top with a power planer (i highly recommend getting one if you dont have one). I nicked one of the cross sections as i got down close so i stopped. I have a nice smooth surface to glue to but i have not got the rails down to exactly follow the curve of the cross sections. If i glued the top down now it looks like i would have small gaps of maybe 3/4 of an inch or so along the rails at each cross section. I dont think this would be a big deal and the rails would be uniform having been plained. If i continue to shape them to get the curve to match more exactly, i will use my belt sander. I think i have more control with it, but I think the rail surface i will then be gluing to would not be as uniform after sanding as it is now but it will have a bit more of a curved shape. I will post a photo, if i can.
any opinions or advice?
Thanks,
Dick
