Hey, hey, don't be so hard on yourself. In the last month I have taken so many of those kinds of mental "vacations" that I would be black and blue if I could kick myself. I think that taking the time to sit down and write your question is just the right way to break your mind out of the tunnel vision that it's easy to get in to.
The thing I like about this forum is that no one on here hasn't been there too.
I appreciate your advice on the Goretex vents. I am hoping to get all my materials in one order. I think I'll order three vents when I do because I almost always foul up my first try at new things and need to have backups.
I had the same question about rails, so thanks for asking and answering that question!

Eddie how did it go using the cedar decking, did you try it for the planks as well? I'm trying to determine whether or not to go that route vs $3.65 per linear foot of vertical grain cedar

I am on my second board now, the first being made from primarily basswood, not as light as cedar but a decent second choice.
Anyway the reason I had initially went with the basswood is that I couldn't find any decent cedar around at either the big box stores or the lumber yards. I did find clear heart cedar at one lumber yard but the pricing was way too much so I decided at the time on basswood.
Well my first board weighs in at around 78 pounds and since my next board is for my wife I definitely wanted a lighter board.
Now to the point, I found great cedar at my local big box store, it was 2x6x12 western red cedar. Great price and beautiful wood that was extremely clean. My original problem was I was always looking at the 1x6 lumber they stack vertically and it always had tons of knots. I decided to look at their other lumber and the 2x6 stuff worked out great. I was able to rip it into 4 deck pieces per board which worked out great. Also great stock for the rails. And the price per bf was around $1.50-$1.75 I believe. Check it out might be worth the look.
