Hi, I finished my first board (using the strip & feather rail) and got addicted! Though I'm definitely not the best woodworker and have pretty low standards of quality control, I find the process really peaceful and enjoyable. And when I surfed my first board and it actually went really well I was totally hooked.
I was the 100th member of this forum and so was lucky enough to receive all of Chad's Templates as a gift. (I was really stoked, thanks Chad).
So I'm making the mini sim with the triangular rail method. So far I've found it has taken me heaps less time than the last board, cause I knew what I was doing a lot more, but mostly due to the quickness of laying up the rails.
Being an avid shortboarder, when I built my rocker table I naively thought to myself "when am I ever going to build a board over 22" wide?" This mini sim being 23" wide I think, I haven't been able to use the threaded rod clamping function of the rocker table, and have just been using weights and hoping for the best.
Anyway I'm gonna try & post some pics

I cut my deck planking too thin at 4mm, and thought i'd better add some bracing through the ribs. The timber is paulownia but with a tiny bit of silky oak left over from my last build. I'm gonna use 6oz glass but I reckon I might put a patch on the deck as well to be safe. I saw somebody on the forum had made little blocks to help with clamping the rail strips. I found this to be really helpful. Attachments:

I cut the rail strips on an old triton workcentre table saw where the blade can't be moved from straight, and so had to make a 45 degree ramp to replace my fence in order to cut the triangles. This resulted in some strips being bigger and some smaller in cross section. This was a bit of a hassle when it came to fitting the last strip, when I only had smaller ones left. Up through the middle 3 or 4 ribs the rails didn't make it over the top of the rib, so I had to glue scraps on top through that section so the deck would have some gluing surface there. I figure they'll either get planed out or be under the deck skin. If not it doesn't matter, as long as there's some wood in there! Definitely not a perfectionist, but at least I'll know for next time. Attachments:

I had some splits in the deck while gluing up. A few along the rails where the deck overhung the rails and i used truck tie-downs as clamps. This broke the deck over the edge of the rail which wasn't a hassle except where the wood split into the real decking part. I filled with epoxy mixed with sawdust so we'll see how it turns out. One thing I was really amazed about with my first board was that after the glass went on, a lot of the little imperfections...well I won't say they disappeared, but just sort of became part of the board somehow. Anyway I can only get better as I go. Attachments:

Also had the glue down the middle strip come apart quite a ways while gluing up the deck. I carefully shaved down a bit of timber with a really sharp chisel & glued it in there. Attachments:

Rough shaping the keels. Not sure if I'll use them or not. Might just make some out of ply. Anyone got any idea of how thick mini simmons fins should be? I've searched a lot on the net about this and also the way they should be foiled but not come up with much at all. Any help is much appreciated! Attachments:
