i live in the uk in a town called bridport in dorset. I will also be trying it down at fistral in newquay. Hi simonz i just joined this forum after buying the book. If you do come down to Cornwall I would be very interested to view your board and seek some advice. (and take a few pics) I currently Sup around the Newquay area on a starboard but would love to build my own someday. There is company in St Agnes runs a 4 day course on wooden board building- but its close to £1000 so i doubt i could convince my wife to let me go on it! cheers, Phil phulup

Go for it and buld one. Its realy good fun, Ive just started to sand mine down today and its looking more like a sup. i will bring it down to newquay if it surives the maiden voyage I think ive done the top deck a bit thin. Is it worth using a slightly thicker cloth forthe glassing? Another question after brushing on the first coat of epoxy, do you let it dry before you put the glass cloth on.

With regard to the deck thickness, how thick is it? What makes you think its too thin? But to answer your question, I would go with a thicker cloth just to make me feel better!
I used 7 oz cloth on my 9'1" but that was because it was on sale! ;D
For your other question, yes I let the "cheater" coat dry for a couple of hours (after the tackiness was gone) before laying the cloth. Did the same thing for the filler coat and gloss coat too!

This is where im at just sanding I think the deck is prob 4mm but has foam under it, there are a few small gaps in some of the joints should i fill these or will the cheater coat fill these. Attachments:

Hmmmm, the foam should be carrying part of the load, while 4 mm seems fairly thin to me that foam has to help somewhat.
I don't think that I would go too far beyond the 6 oz cloth, if any. Maybe 7 oz is on sale in your neck of the woods!
With regard to the small gaps if they are too small to accept a mix of sawdust and glue, the cheater coat should do the job.
The board is looking good!
By the way I like your backyard! Nice little shop you have. All my stuff is getting done in the garage and I always have to really clean it up and move everything around when I want to work on the board. Would be nice to have a separate space for my "projects"!

Right im getting ready to do some glassing the fibreglass is coming its 175 grams square metre and i ordered 5 litres of polyester/styrene resing with catalist. do you think i will be ok using this stuff, it was only £18.00 for 5 litres on ebay. The equivalent in epoxy is £100.00 Can i do a cheater coat with polyester resin or do i need to do some saving for the epoxy Ive been doing some research but i'm even more confused now. Attachments:

Polyester resin works, sometimes the cheaper versions are not as consistent in kicking off and some have wax in them which needs to be cleaned off between coats (see instructions) but overall it can be used. Epoxy is quite expensive here too but it is easy to mix, doesn't smell as bad, and doesn't crack like polyester does Most Epoxy doesn't have UV protection so you should add a varnish coat over the top whereas polyester doesn't require this. Also Epoxy wont shine up like poly will. I usually use polyester because I ride my boards a lot so they are usually covered in salt and crud any way, but when the get we they look shiny

Hi all ive got the cheater coat on and was just wonering why the polyester resin im using is a tan color instead of the blue one you normaly see people using? This stuff stinks i had to get myself a vapour mask And it was definetly easyer to put on with a rollor then a paint brush i kept on loosing the bristles with the brush. Attachments:

The resin you have may be thixed and waxed, most fiberglass shops have plain resin and then mix additives as needed. These additives such as wax are used more for a finish coat, read the instructions to see if you need to wash or sand in between coats to remove this layer of wax.

Hi, there were no instructions only what it says on the container. I think i will have to contact the seller. It does feel very slightly tacky when dry. Attachments:

That's the first layer of glass done, what a horrible job. I didn't mix quite enough resin so had to mix some more up quickly to lap the sides. There's definitely a nack to it. The chap who sold me the resin said that there is no wax added so it should be ok. Attachments:
