You did the rails different than the timeless method. How did you do them?

Hi Simonz, You asked if I sealed with resin, yes. I use the same epoxy resin as I will use for the glass work that assures a good bond. Also if I get the glass on tonight the bond will be chemical as well as mechanical. That is what is good about slow cure epoxy resin. The resin I use is RAKA UV inhibited. www.raka.com/index.htmlThere is the link if you are interested. Hi dsnow, You asked about the rails I built. They are different than the Timeless triangle strip system (which is a very good system to use) Chad's rails are easy and near mistake proof. I just used strips cut 1/4" X 3/4" and glued them 1 at a time in a descending fashion until I could cap the top stack and bottom stack with a bigger strip. They are glued with the wide side against the edge of the deck and that is why there was a little stringer at the edge. it made a good place to put a 2" C clamp and provided more glue surface. I also used Balsa, it bends easy and is light weight. What you wind up with is plenty of wood to shape and a hollow middle area. The nose and tail block is solid. I hope this is not to confusing. Clayton P.

I forgot to say, it looks great. I really like the pin striping. I think I understand what you said. But just to make sure, I attached a rough sketch of what I think you described for the rails. Attachments:

You pretty much hit it My last strip was about 2.25" wide and had to be installed in short sections about 3.5 to 4 foot long to account for the rocker and rise of the nose and tail. I just shaped them roughly as I went along to be sure I had the step spacing close. I just put on the first layer of glass on the deck, man this is fun! Clayton P.

Thanks everyone, I am enjoying my new board, loads of fun and some good exercise too! I go out paddling and come back sore where I didn't even think I was working. I weighed my new board this weekend it is an unbelievable 31 lbs with the heavy FCS glass fin on it. I could loose that 1lb if I had built a fin and glassed it on but what the heck . The 3.2oz glass is a real weight saver. 2 layers is as strong or stronger than 7oz but much lighter. It is the epoxy that weighs so much and the 3.2oz is so thin it doesn't take near as much epoxy to wet it out and fill the weave. I hope everyone is getting some time on the water this season. Hi, I am about to make the Timeless 11’ SUP and have been busy reading all the posts, researching, etc. I too have built a couple of strip wood kayaks the latest being a Georgian Bay by Rob Macks so was really interested that you had used a fair amount of your previous experience to make your SUP.
I do have a couple of questions if I may.
1) As I understand it you did not use any tabs on the deck side of the ribs but reinforced underneath with fibreglass i.e. a wood sandwich as per a stripper. But you did use tabs on the bottom of the ribs. Is this correct?
2) In your last post you mention 2 layers of cloth. Did you use 2 layers on the outside both top and bottom?
Finally, it’s a really great looking board, I don’t know what you use to finish but I use 2 pack clear lacquer as used on cars etc as a final coat. It has all the UV protection, is flexible, hard and I haven’t had to recoat yet after 3 years and it still looks as good as new.
Hopefully there is some kind of email alert and this gets to you. Take care.
Regards Tim (sunny UK - not!!)
