Well I'm making progress. I got my back glued together and the rib assembly drying as I write. I also found out the back of the jig makes for a good spot to glue smaller pieces of the skin together using less clamps. But I was wondering if anyone has used Titebond III to glue with? I used Gorilla glue but seemed to have better luck with the Titebond. I did stay with Gorilla glue to connect the ribs to the back though.

While I am finishing up my rails, I went ahead and started my fin. I have a lot of scrap wood from making mandolins so I used some curly maple with birds eye maple strips and walnut strips between. I think it will come out nice. It will be a classic 9" D fin. Its exactly 3/8" thin . I hope it won't be to thin. Here it is cut out before foiling.

Holy crap, that looks great! I think you will be fine with that thickness and, if anything, it could be considered THICK (by SOME peoples standards). Most fins have a very thin piece of wood and a lot of glass. But there's nothing wrong with a thick fin in my world. Thanks for all the pics, it's coming along just fine!

Thanks Chad. I hope it will look as good as I think once the glass is on it. I guess I should have put these pics in the build section instead of assembly but I guess its to late now.

Say, I thought I was the only genius using threaded rod and 1x4 clamping boards to avoid the huge investment of lots of big clamps! I love the fin - still have to think of how to do one.

Sandpaper I'm in need of something to do while my paddle and bottom deck are drying . I was actually wondering what the dimensions of your fin is. I think an fin box goth a plastic fin would take away from the look of being hand made. I can't find anything on line about the size it should be. Also do you have to put fin blocks In and if so how far off the tail are you?
