I'm at the point where I have to install fin blocks . I was just wondering if I need to install them if I'm not gonna use a box and just build a fin. Also what is a good shape for the fin and how far off the tail should It be placed?

Hi 159....I know it looks like I'm the only one on the forum but there are others out there and with more experience!! You're sort of asking similar questions to what I had done so hopefully I answer with some idea. Regarding the fin blocks, to be honest they do not add a lot of weight and in case you change your mind it is always better to have them in than not to (they can't really be added after the deck goes on). You only perhaps need to do the centre fin block.
In terms of the fin shape I honestly have no idea, I chose and bought (not made) a "Dolphin" fin shape 10" as it was promoted as being a good all rounder but I have zero experience on this. In a previous post of mine I posted a website with some fin shapes to size which you can download and use. Again, with the distance from the tail I think this varies depending on the effect you want in terms of turning, I recommend having a browse through the posts or check out ideas on line.
Thats all I got for you...have fun!

I added fin blocks just to have them there if I decided to install a fin box later. I installed the old school D fin and am happy with it. But I am glad to know I can shave it off and install a if box later and run removable fins. I did break my D fin pulling my board behind a motor boat. It was an easy fix but I had considered removing it and installing a fin box.
