hello wise ones, i'm a carpenter turned dairy farmer, older -early 40's and haven't surfed for a long time... but wanting too for just about an equally long time. living about 40mins south of ahipara (for you kiwis out there). kids are now getting into their surfing (buzz ) and i need a new hobby so thought i'd try and build a board or two.. i've picked a timeless surf 9'2, liked the rail system, seemed easier than strip and lighter than solid. something for me to play on and the kids to use as their soft board foamies are coming to the end of their life span. found some paulownia and getting into it, very addictive at the moment. had a few hassles, didn't quite have enough paulownia, so put in some western red and kaihikatea accent strips. wasn't happy with the deflection in the strips i laminated up - and 26" wouldn't fit through the thicknesser, so split it down the middle and re did it. now 5mm thick, but i'm happy with the job. setting up the rocker jig, re gluing the plans and i'll be into it!. hopefully photos to follow. cheers - justin

greetings karuhi! First things first, age means nothing with surfers!!! I have a bumper sticker that shows a wheelchair on a surfboard and says "To Old, To Fat, Don't Care" I didn't understand it till I hit 55, never looked back! Loving the deck, wish I could find some paulownia up here but the only place I can find it is various lots online in places far away from here... Also like your rocker table, very well built and very reusable!!! Will be waiting for more photos! Eric

hello everyone, love that bumper sticker Eric. laminated/glued the bottom skin to the fishbone last night. yeah progress . am a bit concerned about the spoon nose. i slid packers into the rocker table cross members. next time i will shape the exact packer off the templates and attach it. will also put in some little blocks to hold the spine straight - hard to sight spine with all the laths over the top. and i used 6mm ply to clamp over the top to my rocker table bolts. need to be thicker as they peaked in the middle. undid all the bolts weighted the center and reclamped. hopefully all is well. will know tonight........

Progress with surfboard construction is always good, not so much in other areas though... From the sound of it, you got on it quickly. Be sure to give it plenty of time for the glue to cure. What kind of glue are you using? By the way, I neglected to mention that your description of "found some paulownia and getting into it, very addictive at the moment" really sums it up for me, even though I never got the p-wood. Working with wood is new to me and I'm digging it! A couple of hours working with it seems to be very enjoyable.;D And have sooooooo much more to learn...as well as tools to buy!

hi eric, i'm using titebond III, found a supplier here, so far seems like good goop. time will again tell. yeah i don't move anything for at least 24h. had a quick look at bottom, all good! re-clamped in a couple of places. cut out rough shape and already have the first rail strip gluing on each side. if anyone is buying tools then buy one of those new multi tools like a bosch (what i got) cutter, grinder, sander etc etc reciprocating thingie. i was cutting the board outline with a jigsaw - hated the vibration and roughness of it on my fresh glue. tried the multitool out with the wood/plastic blade. chewed through super fast and as smooth as silk. and i hear you on more to learn. i'm dreading some of the stuff to come. gluing on the top deck and succeding will be so nerve wracking and satisfying. justin
